A few years ago, I had some dealings with Bob Kane, the creator of Batman. I provided him with a VHS tape of “The Bat Whispers”, this of my 16mm print, struck in 1938 from the still-missing 1930 35mm camera negative; the UCLA restorations were derived from the European negative and that for the 65mm widescreen version: the film was actually enacted three different times, none of the releases being available when Kane was questing to again view the picture, it having been one of his inspirations for “Batman”! He was so pleased he sent me three autographed “Batman” posters, along with an original sketch of the Caped Crusader. When speaking with him on the phone, I asked for his take on “The Bat Whispers” when seeing it in his youth. His ego can be somewhat gauged by his response: “So, you want to hear from The Master!”
